Ayurveda
with its distinct notion of treatment was originated in India & has been
prevailing since the pre-vedic times. Rigveda and Atharva-veda ( 5000 years
B.C.), the documented ancient Indian knowledge have various references on
how ayurveda describes health, diseases & remedies. The word "Ayur" means "life" or "principle of life", and the word veda refers to the system of "knowledge". When combined together "Ayurveda" can be termed as "knowledge of life". Ayurveda preaches healthy living along with therapeutic measures, which relate to the physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony. Ayurveda is amidst the ancient systems of medicine to contain a sophisticated system of surgery that is referred to as "salya-chikitsa".
Ayurveda is amongst the oldest systems of health care that deals with both the preventive and curative aspects of life in a unique way. There are eight major principles preached by ayurveda, they are called "Ashtanga Ayurveda":-
